Decision to send NSW wind farm back to drawing board welcomed

The Australian Wind Alliance today welcomed the NSW Planning & Environment Department’s decision to reject a development application for the Jupiter Wind Farm near Tarago, saying it was critical that wind farm developments adhere to the highest standards.

The Department refused to allow the project’s Environmental Impact Statement to be exhibited, citing inadequate communication with the local community and a failure to adhere to guidelines around noise and visual impact.

“Local communities need to have the utmost confidence that wind farm developments will meet the highest standards, and in this instance that clearly wasn’t the case,” said Charlie Prell, a farmer and NSW Coordinator for the Alliance.

“For example, arrangements to share financial benefits with neighbours are becoming more common in new wind energy developments, but were missing from this proposal.

“I know there are many members of the community who will be disappointed with this outcome and we hope the developer will go back to square one and come back with an acceptable proposal after genuine community consultation.”

Australian Wind Alliance National Coordinator Andrew Bray said given the shortcomings of the proposal the Alliance welcomed the Department’s decision to send the project back to the drawing board.

“Wind farms can deliver significant economic benefits to local farmers and towns but they also have to demonstrate that their development is sound,” he said.
